The last quarter of BoD is so unclear that I'm still not completely sure of
everything that happened at the end, though I've read it several times! I
sure wish I knew.
Me too. It is very unfortunate for the Book of D'ni that the deadline
for the book coincided with the deadline for Riven. The whole second
half of the book didn't get anywhere near the attention we would have
liked to have given it.
It's clear that Atrus wrote Tomahna for the D'ni survivors, but I'm still
not sure if he wrote any other Ages for anyone else. On page 306 of the
hardbound BoD, Atrus talks about an Age he'd written and I can't tell if
this was a new Age for the Terahnee, or if it was referring to Tomahna and
that Gat was just visiting before D'ni and Terahnee were sealed from each
other. It sounds like Atrus was saying he was going to leave them, but at
the very end of BoD it sounds like Atrus was living on Tomahna at least
part of the time. I find that very confusing.
It's even more confusing than you think...
The Terahnee (with the exception of a few that choose to go with the D'ni
to their new home) remain on Terahnee, but rename it Devokan (hope).
Atrus writes the Age mentioned on pg. 306 for the D'ni survivors - "one
of the finest Books ever written" from Catherine's description. This Age
is never named in the Book of D'ni.
The Books between Terahnee and D'ni are once again sealed.
Atrus and Catherine don't remain with either group, but instead move to a
place Atrus called "Tomahna".
