Inception

The first Age written by Atrus, at age 17 or 18. (BoA 179-184) The Age was beautiful, natural, and seemed very stable until Gehn, driven by his madness, and possibly jealousy, tampered with the Book and ruined it. (BoA 200-1)

Ink

In addition to ordinary types of ink, the D'ni made a special type of Ink used only in the Art of making Ages. Without this Ink, the Art cannot be practiced. The Ink is apparently harvested in some way from certain beetles. Since the Ink was so important, the beetles were often written into the Ages to assure a good supply. The D'ni work for ink is "lehm."

Ink-Makers, The Guild of

The Guild of Ink-Makers was one of the 18 major Guilds. They were responsible for making the very special Ink used to write the Ages. Without this Ink, the Art could not be practiced.

Iradun, Master

Spoken of as head of the Guild of Surveyors, it appears that he must have been a Grand Master and member of the Council. (BoT 40)

Irrat

The Guild Fortress of Irrat was where Anna was held when she was first captured and where Veovis was held during the periods of his incarceration in D'ni. (BoT 115, 118, 232)

Irrat was a cavern in which there was a lake and at least one island. (BoT 115) There was a Master of the Keys at the prison. Ten spans into the rock was the Gate of Traitors, through which you went to reach the Cells of Entry. Three thousand years before the fall of D'ni they made a cavern deeper into the rock than any other place in D'ni, and within it they made the Cells of Entry, each cell a book room containing a Prison Age Book.

There were fifteen Cells of Entry but few were ever used, because D'ni was an orderly society and transgressions that merited incarceration in a Prison Age were rare. (BoT 254) At the time Veovis was imprisoned, his was the only occupied cell. But Veovis wasn't kept in the cell itself. It was an entry point for a bleak prison age.
