Beetle Hurvig's Journal

160.8.25
I am shaking so with relief and gratitude that I can scarcely write! I had intended to wait until the last day but one to submit my plans for the new building project so as to avoid the wrath of Master Sigo, but this morning, only one week into the submission period, I was suddenly seized with urgent desire to turn them in immediately, lest something happen to prevent me from turning them in at all. I do not know if this was a premonition or merely a bad case of nerves. I found that I could not fight the temptation to have done with the suspense, so I surrendered to it and turned them in at once.

When I handed over my plans, who should be in the submission office, but my old friend Ru'dalon. And him there alone! I confided that I was nervous about Master Sigo's reaction to my submission, and Ru'dalon signified his understanding immediately. He has processed the plans personally himself, so I am assured that they will be brought to the attention of the selection committee immediately, and kept from Master Sigo's attention as long as possible.

And this is not the sum of my blessing, for when I joined Master Sigo not two hours afterward, he told me of his plan to send me to Fontine on Guild business. I am to leave this very evening and shall probably not return to New D'ni until next month. The work itself is usually handled by those with much less rank than I possess, but Master Sigo explained that away with various transparent excuses. I allowed my surprise to show in my expression briefly, and my discomfiture at being assigned to tasks generally considered beneath me, but my speech was suitably dutiful.

On my way to my room to pack up my things for the journey, I was accosted by a fellow guildsman in my office who confided that he'd heard that Master Sigo had been probing his sources to see if any of his personal staff had submitted plans or seemed likely to. This guildsman is being sent off on an extended errand as well, and he scoffed at Master Sigo's fears, saying how could any of us manage to create plans of our own when he's had us working like oxen since he heard of the project.

I merely sighed at the thought of it and said nothing in reply. I needn't worry that this fellow will guess my secret. He came to me only to relieve himself of his burden of frustration, not to hear anything from me.

I have stopped only long enough to secure things here, pack a few necessities for my journey, and write these words while they're fresh. I shall likely not see New D'ni again until well after the submission closing date.
